Hi Fashion Loves,
This is a continuation of my Adventures in Winston-Salem North Carolina to visit my friend Vonda Parker. Old Salem North Carolina was a step back in time to the 18th Century which was on my list to see. Vonda and I strolled through Old Salem and then I went back for my detailed stroll and to photograph the restored old buildings.
Old Salem was established as the central part of town on a 98,985 acre tract of land called Wachovia. A group of Moravians begin this little community in 1766 and name it Salem which means "peace".
The Moravians are a group of eastern european protestant faith that began in the Czech Republic and wanted to relocate to establish their own peaceful, hardworking community. The Moravians were artisans ,cabinet-makers, tinsmiths, gunsmiths,
gardeners and cooks and these skills are seen as you walk along the cobblestone streets and imagining a time long gone.
AS YOU CAN SEE AS I SET MY CAMERA UP TO TAKE PHOTOS WITH MY TIMER I ALWAYS HAVE FANS. PEOPLE QUIT PHOTO BOMBING ME.... |
I wondered pass the Salem Tavern where George Washinton spend two night May 31-June 1, 1791 on his Southern Tour. The Tavern was used as a meeting place and provided meals for individuals passing through. The Tavern is still a restaurant today with a very appealing menu and the Tavern still has the old wood floors and is only restored enough to make it usable but still has the authentic look.
Also another interesting building is the Salem Academy and College established in 1772 by Sister Elisabeth Oestrerlein as a day care for girls. The girls were trained in literature, music and many other subjects. Salem's training of young girls became so well known that people all over would send their girls for training. In the 1880's Salem Academy was certified to award degrees in the subjects offered.

The Single Brothers' House is a residence that was dedicated to unmarried adult men to live together in one residence. There was also a Single Womans' Home. The Single Brothers' House is the largest of the Salem's Old Gardens. The grounds were also used as a nursery for young trees.
Fashion Loves this is just a few buildings to tour in Old Salem North Carolina and many other events offered. On your visit to Old Salem stop at the

Old Salem's step back in time offers costumed performers that walk around and show you what it was like to live as a Moravian in the 18th century. There is a Blacksmiths shop to tour, bakery and sweet gift shops for any souvenirs wanted to create memories experiencing life as a Moravian looking for a better life.
I also fancied myself pumping water like they did any the Old Days. I didn't need anymore water I just got rained on and the Sun pops out so I can conclude my Adventure.... |
On my tour of Old Salem I did meet a few friends but they were not warm and friendly.....That just sat there.. |
The Mikey Coffee Pot is the end of Old Salem and beginning of Winston-Salem's Downtown. The Coffee Pot was originally the focal point of a shop owned by two Moravian Brother's Samuel and Julius Mikey built in 1858...
Old Salem borders Downtown Winston-Salem so you can wonder into the downtown area to see the art galleries, nice boutiques and amazing restaurants. I plan to visit my friend again and Winston-Salem North Carolina. Winston-Salem North Carolina is an amazing town full of culture and fashion to explore and I am just getting started.
Winston-Salem North Carolina was an overnight trip for me because it is 3-1/2 hours away but worth the trip. The next blog will be a tour of Downtown Winston-Salem but until then enjoy the photos of the quaint town of Old Salem.
An Adeventurer and her tools...
Love,
Dana
